Trebuchet
Introduction
This is a Whipper Trebuchet. It is able to launch a tennis ball 80-100m and uses a counterweight for energy. It was constructed using wood, metal shafts, bearings and an assortment of fasteners.
The Challenge
The hardest part about this project was ensuring that the weighted arm was engineered at the correct angle and length in order for the system to maximize its potential energy. As we expected, our calculations weren’t perfect because estimations had to be made. We decided that with the time and resources that we had, that the best solution would be to put it on wheels so it could maximize its transfer of energy throughout the launch.
Testing and Results
To test the system, we analyzed slow-motion video while using different release points, counterweights, and ball harnesses in order to maximize the efficiency of the system.
After completion, the trebuchet was able to launch a tennis ball approximately 100m consistently and accurately.
